In 1863, Abraham Lincoln passed the Emancipation Proclamation, as a result of the Civil War, which saw the abolition of slavery. He deemed this act as a military strategy that was necessary to preserve the Union. Many would refer to Lincoln as the Great Emancipator because of his role in the passing of such a profound bill and it is a common belief by many that Lincoln had always been in favor of the abolition of slavery right from the beginning. However, there are some beliefs that Lincoln is undeserving of this title because his main objective was to save the Union whether that meant freeing all the slaves or none at all.
